Monthly Community Meeting – Minutes October 26, 2011
Chairperson Preston called the meeting to order at 6:35 PM, at Thurgood Marshal Elementary School. Our host was Commissioner King. A quorum as established by call of the roll.

Agenda
· It was moved by Commissioner Griffin and seconded by Commissioner Feeley that the agenda be accepted. The motion passed unanimously by voice vote.
· The minutes were reviewed. It was noted that there had been a vote to support an Emergency Room upgrade at Providence Hospital. With that correction Commissioner King moved and Commissioner Shaw seconded the approval of the minutes. The motion passed unanimously by voice vote.
Treasurer's report - Commissioner Shaw shared the September PNC bank report. The treasurer moved that her budget be accepted and Commissioner King seconded. Approval passed, 9-0-1. The monthly treasurer's report was given by Commissioner Shaw and Commissioner Griffin moved that it be accepted, Feeley seconded. It was approved by voice vote, 8-0-2.
Police Report: Sgt. Hamlin of the 5th District took questions from the audience. It was stated that there was little police presence in Fort Lincoln, especially along Commodore Drive. There was a request for a crosswalk on Bladensburg by the Fort Lincoln senior building located there. There is a traffic officer assigned there on the 3 to 11 p.m. shift (Officer Hopper). The 3100 block of Bladensburg needs a flashing caution light.
Officer Ruiz reported that crime stats are encouraging. There has been a 100% drop in violent crime. Property crime stats are stable.
Invited Guest: Ms. N.D. Powell, vice principal, welcomed the commission and constituents to Thurgood Marshal.
Dr. Thompson, the director of DC Office on Aging, introduced his staff and talked about the Silver haired Legislature, an elected senior advisory council. Ms. Connie Fields has joined the DC Commission on Aging. The commission is hiring a general council. The commission has moved to 500 K St., NE, the Hayes building. A resident complained that senior bus trips are being cancelled by the rec., department. Budgetary constraints were an influence but, Dr. Thompson said that he would consult with Jennifer Hamilton at the Dept. of Rec.
Mr. Marino, developer, shared the progress on the shopping center complex coming for Fort Lincoln. He stated that the permits are in hand and Costco should be coming in the fall of 2012. He stated that the homes at Dakota Crossing (Ryan Homes) sell for between $280.000 and $400,000. Commissioner King stated that he wanted to see a tax on online gambling winnings go to support job training in DC. The commissioner also commended Loretta Caldwell for her role as the monitor on all first source agreements.
Councilman Thomas was introduced by Commissioner King, who encouraged loyalty to the Councilman during his difficulties with the US Attorney's Office. Councilman Thomas spoke on the following matters: 1. Ross opening at Hechinger Mall.

The councilman is working to protect the job benefits of city workers. He gave
his cell phone, 202-4395103.
Commission
Business: The
chair reported that bids had been submitted for the emergency electrical work
at the ANC offices. The bid from RSC was recommended to be accepted.
Commissioner King seconded that motion. Unanimous support was expressed by the
commission that this work go forward when a vote was then taken.

Chair Preston moved for Adjournment, Commissioner Griffin seconded. Unanimous
approval and the Chair adjourned the meeting at 8:30 PM.
